Text and images have been interconnected in art for thousands of years. Egyptian hieroglyphics circa 3200BC were a pictorial language painted on papyrus to tell stories about society. In the 13th to 15th centuries illuminated manuscripts from were made with animal skins to tell stories about religion or rulers. Nowadays, artists use text in various forms (printed, calligraphic and pictorial forms), to make works which communicate their ideas about the world. Language and aesthetic properties are in dialogue with one another, refuting or reinforcing, the message(s) of the work.

"AMOR FATI"
February 19, 2020 till December, 2022
EQUAL SPACE
89 Market Street, Newark, NJ (3rd Floor)
Curated by: Belmira PS
The title of this show, located in EQUAL SPACE, is “AMOR FATI”. Which loosely translates to “Love of Fate”. It is used to describe an attitude in which one sees everything that happens in one's life, including suffering and loss, as good or, at the very least, necessary. Oquendo is steering his work to align with his beliefs and practice of Stoicism and positive affirmations that help him make incremental progress in his life and his struggle with his disability. AMOR FATI is the practice of loving everything that happens and seeing all circumstances as a chance to grow. Not just accepting it, nor simply tolerating it, but leaning into it.
